Additive Titanium Manufacturing to Repair Critically Sized Antebrachial Bone Defects in Two Dogs

چکیده
Abstract Recent developments in the medical field of additive manufacturing (AM) have allowed creation patient-specific porous titanium implants for use field. With correct pore size such scaffolds are able to be integrated into surrounding bone. Two dogs were presented with atrophic non-union proximal ulna involving elbow joint due previous orthopaedic procedures severe complications that led segmental bone defects not expected heal without a secondary intervention. Computed tomography (CT) was performed and saw guides designed silico printed by AM. Osteotomies adjacent healthy guided three-dimensional (3D)-printed nylon allowing perfect fit 3D-printed implant. In one case scaffold filled morphogenic protein held place two plates. other cancellous graft plate part design. Both cases regained function weight-bearing lameness. Osseointegration implant shown both on follow-up CT radiographs macroscopically evident pores 3D after removal. One dog euthanatized unrelated disease micro-CT revealed solid bridging through inner tunnel. This study showed successful application design, fabrication clinical repair antebrachium dogs.

Additive manufacturing for in situ repair of osteochondral defects.
Tissue engineering holds great promise for injury repair and replacement of defective body parts. While a number of techniques exist for creating living biological constructs in vitro, none have been demonstrated for in situ repair. Using novel geometric feedback-based approaches and through development of appropriate printing-material combinations, we demonstrate the in situ repair of both cho...
متن کاملPoly-ε-caprolactone Coated and Functionalized Porous Titanium and Magnesium Implants for Enhancing Angiogenesis in Critically Sized Bone Defects
For healing of critically sized bone defects, biocompatible and angiogenesis supporting implants are favorable. Murine osteoblasts showed equal proliferation behavior on the polymers poly-ε-caprolactone (PCL) and poly-(3-hydroxybutyrate)/poly-(4-hydroxybutyrate) (P(3HB)/P(4HB)). As vitality was significantly better for PCL, it was chosen as a suitable coating material for further experiments. T...
متن کاملMicroparticles for Sustained Growth Factor Delivery in the Regeneration of Critically-Sized Segmental Tibial Bone Defects
This study trialled the controlled delivery of growth factors within a biodegradable scaffold in a large segmental bone defect model. We hypothesised that co-delivery of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and platelet derived growth factor (PDGF) followed by bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) could be more effective in stimulating bone repair than the delivery of BMP-2 alone. Poly(lact...
متن کاملBone repair induced by bone morphogenetic protein in ulnar defects in dogs.
In dogs, resection of a length of the ulna equal to twice the diameter of the mid-shaft leaves a defect which consistently fails to unite. In response to an implant of 100 mg of bovine bone morphogenetic protein (BMP), the defect becomes filled by callus consisting of fibrocartilage, cartilage and woven bone within four weeks. The cartilage is resorbed and replaced by new bone in four to eight ...
متن کاملLaser and Electron Beam Additive Manufacturing Methods of Fabricating Titanium Bone Implants
Additive Manufacturing (AM) methods are generally used to produce an early sample or near net-shape elements based on three-dimensional geometrical modules. To date, publications on AM of metal implants have mainly focused on knee and hip replacements or bone scaffolds for tissue engineering. The direct fabrication of metallic implants can be achieved by methods, such as Selective Laser Melting...
